What are Stolpersteine?

Stolpersteine ("stumbling stones") are an art project by Gunter Demnig. The small brass plaques are set into the pavement in front of the last freely chosen home of people who were persecuted, deported, expelled or murdered under National Socialism. Each stone gives the name, year of birth and fate of one person. Since the 1990s, more than 100,000 Stolpersteine have been laid in many European countries.
