Amanda i Max mieli dwóch synów: Fritza i Ernsta. Zarówno Flora i jej teściowa, Amanda były teraz wdowami. Flora i Amanda pracowały razem, wychowując Wolfganga i Jerry'ego oraz prowadząc firmę "Hannes & Co" - sklep z zabawkami i galanterią skórzaną przy Hospitalstrasse 5.

Fritz był żonaty z Florą Hannes. Mieli razem dwóch synów, Wolfganga i Gerharda.

Wolfgang i Jerry poszli w ślady swojego ojca Fritza i dziadka Maxa, zdobywając wykształcenie kupieckie. Wolfgang, któremu w pracy groził członek partii nazistowskiej, jako następny wyjechał z żoną Ruth w 1937 r., najpierw do Argentyny, a później do Ameryki.

W 1941 roku wraz z grupą innych starszych Żydów została potajemnie przemycona z kraju: najpierw do Portugalii, a następnie do Ameryki.

Flora, Wolfgang i Jerry wiedli dostatnie życie w Ameryce. Flora zamieszkała z Jerrym i jego rodziną. Mieszkali w Północnej Karolinie. Flora zmarła w 1958 roku w wieku 81 lat. Wolfgang dożył 88 lat i odszedł w 1998 roku. Wolfgangowi pozostało dwoje dzieci, Judi i Steve.

_ _ _ _ _ _
(EN): The Hannes Family were a family with deep roots in the Jewish community of Görlitz.

The family matriarch was Amanda Hannes. Amanda and her husband Max owned a very successful leather goods and toy wholesale business called "Hannes & Co". It was located at Hospitalstrasse 5.

Amanda and Max were the proud owners of the gorgeous villa at Mühlweg 20, where they lived. Amanda and Max had two sons: Fritz and Ernst. Ernst tragically passed away in 1914 while in action, fighting as a (Jewish) soldier for the German Empire in World War I. Tragedy would continue to befall the family. Amanda’s husband Max was the first person in the Hannes family to fall victim to the Spanish Flu of 1918. In Autumn 1918, her only surviving son Fritz was also claimed by the Spanish Flu. Fritz was only 34 years old. Ernst, Max, and Fritz are buried in the Görlitz Jewish Cemetery. Both Flora and her mother-in-law, Amanda were now widows. Flora and Amanda worked together to both raise Wolfgang and Jerry as well as run their business "Hannes & Co" a toy and leather goods store located at Hospitalstrasse 5.

Fritz was married to Flora Hannes. Together they had two sons, Wolfgang and Gerhard.
After Fritz's death, Flora continued to run the family's business. Amanda became a very important figure in the lives of her two grandchildren. She took care of them while their mother was running the store.

In interviews, Wolfgang and Jerry both described their mother Flora as "bohemian" and "soft-spoken" in her ways. She was not as conservative or traditional as her mother-in-law, Amanda Hannes. The two men spoke fondly of their mother, and speak tenderly of their childhood here in Görlitz along with the many travels that they made with their mother and grandmother during holidays to the North Sea, the Alps, and the Riesengebirge as children.

Both Wolfgang and Jerry would follow in the footsteps of their father, Fritz and grandfather, Max, becoming well-trained in the mercantile business. When the Nazis came to power, their lives would be turned upside down. Jerry was the first to flee Germany . Jerry fled the country of his birth after hearing one of Hitler's hate-filled speeches. in 1933: first to France and later to America. After being threatened at work by a member of the Nazi party, Wolfgang would be the next to leave with his wife Ruth in 1937, first to Argentina and later to America.

Flora was the last to escape the horrors of the Nazi Regime. She was smuggled out of the country with a group of other elderly Jewish people in secret in 1941: first to Portugal and then onwards to America.

Flora, Wolfgang, and Jerry all had prosperous lives in America. Flora moved in with Jerry and his family. They lived in North Carolina. Flora died in 1958 at the age of 81 years old. Wolfgang lived to the age of 88 years old, passing away in 1998. Wolfgang is survived by his two children, Judi and Steve. Judi just recently reclaimed her German citizenship this year and works to preserve the memory of her family members who both perished and survived the Holocaust. Jerry lived to the age of 96 years old, passing away peacefully in his home in 2009. Jerry is survived by his two sons Lawrence and David.

In 2021, the Hannes family are excited to see the installation of 4 stolpersteine honoring the legacy of Flora, Wolfgang, and Jerry (all survivors) at Augustastrasse 30 and Amanda (who was murdered by the Nazis) at Kunnerwitzer Str. 17.

Written by: Lauren Leiderman (January 2021)
© Kulturbüro Görlitz",[8,14,19,24
"https://stolpersteine-guide.de:443/uploads/medien/d57064fde86d4965399cdc6cd7cff899.jpeg","https://stolpersteine-guide.de:443/uploads/medien/d57064fde86d4965399cdc6cd7cff899_thumb.jpeg","Wolfgang and Gerhard as young boys in Görlitz.
",1136,840
"https://stolpersteine-guide.de:443/uploads/medien/3459d83458f7d74d677f5d1c66986f0e.jpeg","https://stolpersteine-guide.de:443/uploads/medien/3459d83458f7d74d677f5d1c66986f0e_thumb.jpeg","Wolfgang, Flora, and Gerhard Hannes at their home in Görlitz.",904
"https://stolpersteine-guide.de:443/uploads/medien/d5fdaebf168166f0a82b362cdcc43a14.jpeg","https://stolpersteine-guide.de:443/uploads/medien/d5fdaebf168166f0a82b362cdcc43a14_thumb.jpeg","Flora and Fritz Hannes",949
"https://stolpersteine-guide.de:443/uploads/medien/5b1e8e16f9ee4affa81bcc20b347d28b.jpeg","https://stolpersteine-guide.de:443/uploads/medien/5b1e8e16f9ee4affa81bcc20b347d28b_thumb.jpeg","The Hannes and Bach Family celebrating the wedding of Wolfgang and Ruth Hannes
1st Row: Wolfgang Hannes, Amanda Hannes, Ruth Bach Hannes, and Bertha Bach
2nd Row: Flora Hannes and several Bach Cousins",824,[],null
51.147844,14.984822,[35,44,51
"6416","Flora","Hannes
https://stolpersteine-guide.de:443/uploads/portraits/44381475a0b0c4bc3119c4bcfc705d58.jpeg","https://stolpersteine-guide.de:443/uploads/portraits/44381475a0b0c4bc3119c4bcfc705d58_thumb.jpeg","female","adault
"6417","Wolfgang
https://stolpersteine-guide.de:443/uploads/portraits/6215e0c8a9ee41c17cbee92fc29024aa.jpeg","https://stolpersteine-guide.de:443/uploads/portraits/6215e0c8a9ee41c17cbee92fc29024aa_thumb.jpeg","male
"6418","Gerhard
https://stolpersteine-guide.de:443/uploads/portraits/f6a793293cc1055e4916ce5931ea3ff8.jpeg","https://stolpersteine-guide.de:443/uploads/portraits/f6a793293cc1055e4916ce5931ea3ff8_thumb.jpeg
"208
51.153559,14.984676,"Görlitz","Kulturbüro Görlitz","Inhaltlich Verantwortlicher gemäß § 55 Abs. 2 RStV: Daniel Breutmann (Jakobstr. 5a, D-02826 Görlitz)

Kontakt: Daniel Breutmann und Lauren Leiderman @ Kulturbüro Görlitz
Projekt Stolpersteine Görlitz Zgorzelec
Anfragen richten Sie bitte an info@stolpersteine-goerlitz.de
Tel. +49 3581 727537
